Often yes, and for a reason that is specific to this climate rather than to insulation in general. But not in every house and not in every assembly, and the useful part of this page is the part that tells you which one you have.
We are going to argue the case honestly, including the cases where our answer is no. If you read one thing here, read the section on when to fix something else first. That is the one that saves people the most money.
The short version
Spray foam is usually worth it in a Seattle home when the assembly has a moisture problem as well as a heat loss problem: damp vented crawl spaces, rim joists, roof decks you want inside the envelope, and shallow cavities where inches are scarce. It is usually not worth it in a wide open attic where blown-in at depth does the same job for far less. And it is never worth it before you have dealt with bulk water, a failing roof, or rodents.
Why the Seattle answer is not the national answer
Most of what you will read about spray foam was written for a climate we do not have. Our problem is not 100 degree summers and it is not Minnesota winters. We are in climate zone 4C, marine. What that means in practice is a long, damp, mild heating season. The furnace or the heat pump runs for months at a stretch, but it never runs hard. Nothing in a Seattle winter is dramatic. It is just relentless.
Three local facts change the math:
- The heating season is long, so small losses add up. A drafty rim joist in Phoenix costs you very little. The same rim joist here leaks for eight months a year.
- The housing stock is old and it is built over vented crawl spaces. Craftsman bungalows, mid-century ramblers, split-levels. Shallow 2×4 walls, leaky attic planes, and a damp vented space under the floor is the standard Puget Sound package.
- A lot of these houses run on electricity. Baseboard heat and heat pumps are everywhere here. When the heat is electric, the bill is very visible and very immediate, which is why so many people arrive at this page in January.
Put those together and you get the actual Seattle argument for foam. Air sealing plus closed-cell handles heat loss and moisture in the same pass, in the same assembly, on the same day. That combination matters more in this climate than a straight R-value comparison against fiberglass would ever tell you. A vented crawl space full of soggy batts has a heat problem and a water problem, and only one of those is measured in R-value. When spray foam is clearly worth it here
These are the assemblies where we are comfortable recommending it without hedging, because the moisture side of the job is doing as much work as the insulation side.
- A damp vented crawl space. The most common yes we give. Wet batts, cold floors, and ground moisture are one problem, not three. See crawl space insulation.
- Rim joists. Small area, big leak, cheap to do while we are already under the house. Almost always a good buy.
- A roof deck, when you actually want a conditioned attic. If your ducts or your air handler live up there, bringing the attic inside the envelope is worth real money.
- Shallow 2×4 cavities in a pre-1960 house. When you only have three and a half inches, R-value per inch stops being a spec sheet argument and starts being the whole decision. This is where closed-cell earns its premium.
- A bonus room over the garage. Cold in winter, stuffy in August, and the cantilevered floor is usually the culprit. Foam fixes rooms like this more reliably than anything else we do.
- Anywhere moisture is part of the complaint. If the words musty, damp, or mildew came up when you described the problem, foam is probably in the conversation.
When it is probably not worth it
We turn work down for these reasons regularly. None of them are close calls.
- A generous attic cavity with room to work. If you have the depth, blown-in at a proper depth gets you the same performance for a fraction of the price. Air seal the ceiling plane first, then bury it. That is the correct answer and it is not our product. See attic insulation.
- The real problem is leaky ducts or a dying heat system. Ducts running through a vented crawl space and losing conditioned air into the dirt will beat any insulation upgrade for wasted money. Fix the delivery before you upgrade the container.
- You are selling within a year or two. Foam is a long hold investment. If you are listing next spring, you will not live in the comfort you paid for, and buyers rarely pay a premium for insulation they cannot see.
- A few hundred dollars of air sealing captures most of the benefit. This is more common than people expect. Attic hatches, top plates, can lights, plumbing penetrations, and the band around the chimney chase. If that is your house, we will quote you air sealing and leave the foam out of it.
Fix these first, before anyone quotes you insulation
Foam covers things up. That is fine when what is underneath is sound, and it is expensive when it is not.
Bulk water and drainage
Standing water in the crawl space, a downspout dumping at the foundation, grade sloping toward the house. Solve the water first or you are insulating a wet problem.
An aging roof
Foam bonded to the underside of the sheathing makes a future leak much harder to spot. If the roof has a few years left in it, do the roof first.
Rodent contamination
Common in vented Seattle crawl spaces and not something to seal in. Cleanup and exclusion come before insulation, every time.
A heat system at the end of its life
If the furnace is on borrowed time, that decision changes what the house needs. Make it first, then insulate around the answer.
The returns that never show up on a bill
If we are being honest, the energy savings are usually the reason people start looking and almost never the reason they are glad afterward. The things homeowners actually tell us about later are these:
The floor stops being cold. A Seattle floor over a vented crawl space is cold from October to May, and socks do not fix it. Sealing and insulating that assembly changes how a house feels to walk around in, and no payback calculation captures that.
The drafts go away. Not the wind you can feel at a window, the slow cold movement you cannot point at. Air sealing is what stops that, and foam does it as a side effect of being foam.
The house gets quieter. More noticeable with open-cell and in walls than anywhere else, but real. Houses near Aurora, near the airport flight path, or on a busy arterial notice it right away.
The crawl space smell stops coming upstairs. That musty basement smell in a house with no basement is crawl space air being pulled up through the floor. Control the moisture down there and the smell goes with it. For a lot of our customers this alone was worth the money.
The upstairs and downstairs get closer to the same temperature. Which is usually what someone means when they say a room is uncomfortable.
An honest cost frame
Here is the money, with no savings promises attached to it.

A board foot is one square foot at one inch thick, so thickness drives the price as much as area does. Access drives it too: a tight crawl space with a small hatch is slower and harder than an open basement wall, and slower costs more. Anyone who gives you a firm number for your house over the phone is guessing, and we will not do it.
What we are deliberately not going to do is quote you a savings percentage or a payback period. The honest answer depends on your fuel, your rate, how leaky the house is now, and how you actually live in it. A reasonable way to decide: if the assembly is damp, tight on inches, or part of a room you actively avoid, foam is probably worth it. If it is a dry attic with plenty of room and your real complaint is the bill, start with air sealing and blown-in and see where you land. We are happy to be the ones who tell you that.
Common questions
Is spray foam worth it if I heat with electric baseboard?
Often yes, because electric resistance heat is expensive per unit of heat delivered, so every bit of loss you stop is worth more than it would be on a gas furnace. That said, the same rule applies: it is worth it in the assemblies where it belongs. If your house is a bungalow over a damp vented crawl space with electric heat upstairs, insulating and sealing that crawl space is usually the highest value thing you can do. We will still tell you if air sealing alone gets you most of the way.
Does spray foam make sense in a mild climate like Seattle?
It does, but not for the reason people assume. We do not have extreme temperatures, so raw R-value arguments are less decisive here than they are in Minnesota or Texas. What we do have is a long damp heating season and a lot of assemblies where moisture is part of the problem. Spray foam addresses air movement and moisture at the same time, and in climate zone 4C marine that combination is usually the deciding factor, not the R-value itself.
How long before spray foam pays for itself?
We will not give you a number, because anyone who does is making it up. Payback depends on your fuel and rate, how leaky the house is right now, which assembly you are treating, how much of the house that assembly touches, and how you heat and live in it. Two identical looking Seattle houses can land years apart. What we can do is show you the ranges and the variables so you can judge it yourself.
Is it worth it if I am selling the house soon?
Usually not. Insulation is invisible, buyers rarely pay a premium for it, and you will not be there long enough to enjoy the comfort you paid for. If there is a genuine defect, a soaked crawl space or rodent damaged insulation, that is a different conversation and it may need addressing before an inspection. But installing foam purely to improve a listing is not something we will encourage.
What if I only have money for one thing?
Air seal first, nearly every time. It is the cheapest per unit of benefit in almost any Seattle house and it is the step that makes everything else work properly. After that, the crawl space is usually the next best dollar in an older Puget Sound home, because it is where comfort, moisture, and smell all get fixed together.
