Does Spray Foam Insulation Smell Go Away?

Yes, if it was mixed and installed correctly. Here is the normal timeline, the warning signs of foam that will never stop smelling, and what to do about it.

Yes. Spray foam that was mixed correctly and installed correctly has a noticeable smell during the install and for a short cure period afterwards, and then it stops. What is not normal is a strong smell that is still there weeks or months later, and that usually means the chemicals went in off ratio.

We want to be straight about the second half of that, because it is the part nobody selling foam likes to say out loud. Foam that never cured properly generally cannot be aired out or sealed over. It has to come out. If you are reading this late at night because your house still smells like paint, that is a reasonable question and you deserve a real answer rather than reassurance.

The short version

Strong odour during the spray and through the re-entry period your installer gives you: expected. A faint trace for a few days after that, fading a little each day: common and generally fine. A strong chemical, fishy, or paint-like smell that is still obvious after a couple of weeks, or that is getting worse: not normal. Do not sleep in it, ventilate, and get the install assessed.

What the smell actually is

Spray foam arrives as two separate liquids, usually called the A side and the B side. They are kept in separate drums, heated, pushed through separate hoses, and they only meet at the tip of the gun. When they meet in the right proportion, at the right temperature and pressure, they react with each other and turn into solid foam in a couple of seconds.

The smell on install day is that reaction happening, plus the blowing agent and the small amount of unreacted material in the air while it goes off. In a correct install the two sides consume each other almost completely, so there is very little left to keep giving off a smell and the odour drops away quickly as the foam finishes curing.

When the reaction is incomplete, you get the opposite. Some of the chemistry never finds its partner, so it sits in the foam and slowly releases into your house. That is the foam people describe as smelling like paint, like fish, or like a swimming pool a month after the crew left. It does not wear off, because the source is still in the wall.

Those windows move a little with the product, the thickness, and how much air you can get through the space. A sealed crawl space with one small hatch clears slower than an open attic with gable vents. What should not move is the shape of the curve: it should be going down steadily, and close to gone inside a few weeks.

Why re-entry times exist, and why you should get yours in advance

Re-entry time is not a formality. During and shortly after application the air in that space contains material you should not be breathing, which is why the crew is in full-face respirators and hooded suits and you are not in the house. The manufacturer publishes guidance for the specific product, and a competent installer builds a plan around it: containment so the chemicals stay in the work area, ventilation moving air out of the building rather than around it, and a stated number of hours before anyone goes back in.

You should be given that number before install day. It is a fair question to put to anyone bidding your job: which product are you spraying, what is its published re-entry time, how are you ventilating, and when exactly can my family be back in the house. An installer who cannot answer that quickly has told you something useful.

A faint residual smell versus a persistent strong one

  • Faint and fading. You notice it when you open the crawl space hatch or walk into a closed-up room, and less each week. Nobody in the house is reacting to it. That is the tail end of a normal cure.
  • Strong and stubborn. You smell it in living space without going looking for it, it has not changed in two or three weeks, and it comes back within an hour of closing the windows. That pattern points at off-ratio foam.
  • Patchy. One bay stinks and the rest of the run does not. That often means something went wrong for part of the job rather than all of it, which changes the scope of any fix.
  • Odour plus wrong texture. Foam that is sticky, oily, crumbly, or that shrank away from the framing. Smell and texture failing together is a strong signal. See how to tell if your spray foam was installed correctly.

What makes a cure go wrong

Almost every persistent-smell story we get called out to traces back to one of four things, and all four are within the installer’s control.

Off ratio

The A side and B side did not arrive at the gun in equal proportion. Unequal pressures, a partly blocked hose, a bad transfer pump, or a crew that did not check and log the pressures. This is the biggest single cause and the least forgivable one.

Cold substrate

Foam has a temperature range it will react and bond in. In a Seattle February, crawl space walls, rim joists, and roof sheathing sit well below that range even when the air feels workable. Spraying cold wood without bringing the surface up first gives you poor adhesion and an incomplete cure. We check the surface temperature, not the weather app.

Too thick a pass

Closed-cell is built up in controlled lifts. Too much in one pass traps the heat of the reaction inside the foam, which scorches the core, ruins the cure through the middle, and in bad cases is a genuine fire risk. Building depth properly takes longer. We take longer.

Equipment out of calibration

Drum temperatures, hose heat, proportioner pressures, and the gun itself all need to be set for the product and checked through the day. Cold chemical straight off a truck on a wet morning does not spray like chemical brought up to temperature properly.

About the health question, honestly

We install insulation. We are not doctors, and we are not going to pretend otherwise on a website. So here is the line we hold: we will tell you what is normal and what is not for the material, and anything about symptoms or your family’s health belongs with a medical professional who can actually ask you questions.

What we will say plainly is that being cautious here is reasonable. People with chemical sensitivities, people with asthma or other respiratory conditions, infants and small children, and people who are pregnant are all reasonable candidates for a longer re-entry window and more ventilation than the minimum. If you want to be conservative about when your family goes back in, be conservative. We have never thought less of a customer for that.

On the version of this question we hear most, some form of “it still smells and my child sleeps up there, is that okay”: the honest answer is that if the smell is strong and persistent, nobody should be sleeping in it. Move them to another part of the house, get air moving through that space, keep the door closed, and get the install looked at. That is not alarmism. A persistent strong odour is telling you something is wrong with the foam, and the fix is the foam, not tolerating it. If anyone in the house has symptoms, call a doctor rather than waiting to see whether it settles.

What to do if it does not go away

Document it

Dates, which rooms, how strong, whether it changes with weather or heating. Photos of the foam. Keep your contract and the product name.

Contact the installer in writing

Phone first if you like, then follow up in writing so there is a record. Ask for the product data sheet and the ratio and temperature records for your job.

Get an independent assessment

Someone with no stake in the original job, looking at and sampling the foam. If the installer is vague or defensive, this is the step that gets you the truth.

Understand what a real fix is

Cured, correct foam can stay. Off-ratio foam generally has to be removed, and removal is mechanical and expensive. Sealing over it is not a fix.

Why we are so particular about this

Mix ratio and substrate temperature sound like details until you understand that they are the difference between a house that is warmer and a house that is unlivable. There is no touch-up for off-ratio foam and no second coat that fixes it. The only remedy is to remove what we put in.

So we would rather take an extra day. Warm the substrate and wait for it. Check the proportioner and check it again. Build depth in passes instead of rushing the thickness. Say no to a job in conditions we cannot control. Fifteen years of this work in this climate has taught us that the cheapest version of a spray foam job is the one done right the first time, and the most expensive one is the job that has to be scraped back off. Common questions about spray foam odour

How long should spray foam smell after installation?

Expect a strong odour during the spray and through the re-entry period your installer specifies, then a fading trace for a few days after you are back in the house. By two to four weeks a correctly installed job should have no odour you notice in living space. The exact window depends on the product, the thickness, and the ventilation. If the smell is not clearly fading week over week, treat that as a problem rather than as patience.

Can I make the smell go away faster by ventilating more?

Yes for a normal cure. Moving outside air through the space, ideally exhausting it out of the building rather than circulating it around the house, helps the last of a normal odour clear faster and does no harm. What ventilation will not do is fix foam that was mixed off ratio, because the source is still in the assembly and the smell returns as soon as you close the windows. If more air helps only while the fan is running, that is a warning sign rather than a solution.

Is the smell dangerous?

We are insulation contractors, not a medical authority, so we will not tell you what is safe for your specific household. What we can tell you is the material reality: during and shortly after application the air in the work space is not something to breathe, which is why re-entry times and ventilation exist. A strong persistent odour weeks later means uncured chemical is still present, and that is worth taking seriously rather than living with. If anyone at home has symptoms, or you are pregnant, chemically sensitive, or have a child with asthma, speak to a doctor and be conservative about re-entry.

My installer says it just needs more time. Is that true?

Sometimes, early on. A thick application in a cold, poorly ventilated crawl space can take longer to settle than the same product in an open attic in August. But “give it more time” stops being a credible answer somewhere around the three to four week mark, especially if the smell has not changed at all in that period. At that point, ask for the product data sheet and the pressure and temperature records for your job, and get an independent opinion. Time does not fix chemistry that never happened.

Does open-cell smell longer than closed-cell?

They are different products with different chemistry and different published re-entry times, so the specifics vary by manufacturer rather than by category. Either one will off-gas for months if it went in off ratio. The material type matters far less than whether it was mixed and applied correctly.
