How Do I Know If My Spray Foam Was Installed Correctly?

Six things you can check yourself with a flashlight and a tape measure, what each result actually means, and your realistic options if the job was not done right.

If your foam is even and firm, sits at the depth you were quoted, is bonded tight to the wood, and stopped smelling within a few days of curing, it was very probably installed correctly. The real warning signs are the opposite of that list: a strong odour still hanging around weeks later, thickness well under what you paid for, foam pulling away from the framing, and a crunchy, oily, or mushy texture instead of a firm uniform one.

Almost all of that you can check yourself. You need a flashlight, a tape measure, a thin metal skewer or a long screwdriver, and about half an hour. This page walks the checks in the order we would do them if you called us out, tells you what a normal result looks like, and is honest about the point where a homeowner check stops and a professional assessment starts.

The short version

Six things to check: the smell weeks after the job, the measured thickness against the quote, whether the foam is stuck to the substrate, the texture and colour consistency, whether the product matches what you bought, and what is written on the invoice. If five of the six are fine and one is marginal, you probably have a small fix. If the smell is still strong, stop and get an independent look before anything else.

1. Start with the smell

During the spray and for the cure period afterwards, spray foam smells strongly chemical. That is expected, and it is why you are supposed to be out of the house with the space ventilated. With decent ventilation, most of that goes away within a day or so of the job finishing, and a faint trace can linger for a few days after that. Everybody notices it. It fades.

What is not normal is a strong smell weeks or months later. Homeowners describe it as fresh paint, cat urine, rotten fish, or a sharp ammonia note that gets worse on a warm day or when the heat comes on. If people get headaches or scratchy eyes in that part of the house, take it seriously.

A persistent strong odour usually means the two chemical components did not meet in the right ratio, at the right temperature, at the right pressure. Off-ratio foam never fully reacts, so it keeps releasing what did not get used up. This is the one failure mode with no good news attached: off-ratio foam generally cannot be fixed in place. A fair way to test it

Your nose adapts to a smell you live with. Close the house up for a day, go out for a few hours, then walk back in from outside and pay attention in the first thirty seconds. Do it again on a warm afternoon, because heat drives off-gassing. If a visitor comments on a smell you had stopped noticing, that is data, not rudeness.

2. Measure the depth and compare it to what you paid for

This is the check that catches the most problems, and it is arithmetic rather than opinion. Pull out your quote. It should state a thickness in inches, an R-value, or both.

To measure, push a thin skewer or a small screwdriver straight into the foam until it stops at the substrate, pinch it at the foam surface with your thumbnail, pull it out, and measure against a tape. Do it in a lot of places, not two. Middle of a bay, the corners of that bay, near the ends of the run, up against the top plate, behind ductwork, around every pipe and wire penetration you can reach, and in the far corner of the crawl space that is the least pleasant to get to. The awkward spots are exactly where a rushed crew runs thin.

So if your quote says closed-cell at R-21 and your skewer keeps coming back at an inch and three quarters, the number on the paper and the number in the house do not agree. One test spot proves nothing. A dozen spots that all read short is a finding.

What is normal unevenness and what is not

Sprayed foam is not poured concrete. The surface will be lumpy, and where it was trimmed flush to the studs you will see scrape and saw marks. That is fine and expected. What you are looking for is a systematic shortfall, not a quarter of an inch here and there. Also look for the misses: an entire cavity skipped behind a duct, a gap where the foam stops short at the edge of a bay, an unsealed ring around a pipe or a recessed light, a hatch perimeter left open. Those gaps matter more than people expect, because a small hole leaks a surprising amount of air and undoes a good part of what you paid for.

3. Check that it is actually stuck

Foam has to bond to the substrate. Press firmly on the face in several places. Then tap it with a knuckle or the handle of a screwdriver and listen. Solid, dull, dead sound is what you want. A hollow drum sound means there is a void behind the face, and the foam is bridging rather than bonding.

Look along the edges where the foam meets the framing. A clean continuous join is right. A visible gap, a lifted lip you can get a fingernail under, or foam that has shrunk back and left a shadow line along every stud is not. The usual causes are a substrate that was too cold, too damp, or too dirty when it was sprayed, or a pass that was laid on too thick and pulled itself off as it cured.

A hairline shrinkage gap in one or two places is common and can usually be sealed. Foam letting go along whole runs is a different problem, and it does not get better with time.

4. Look at the foam itself

Properly reacted foam looks and feels consistent from one end of the job to the other. Colour varies between manufacturers, so judge by texture and uniformity rather than by shade alone.

Crunchy, brittle, oily, sticky, or mushy foam all point the same direction: the chemistry did not go right. The specific flavour of wrong depends on which side of the ratio was off and how hot or cold the material and the substrate were.

5. Did you get the product you actually paid for?

Closed-cell runs roughly $1.00 to $2.00 per board foot installed in this market. Open-cell runs roughly $0.50 to $0.70. That gap is the whole motive, and substitution is the single most common complaint we hear from people who suspect they were taken advantage of.

The easy check is your thumb. Closed-cell is rigid. You should not be able to press a dent into it, and a cavity sprayed with closed-cell noticeably stiffens the structure. Open-cell squishes like a firm sponge and springs back. If your quote says closed-cell and the bay is filled soft and full to the face, something needs explaining.

The skin-coat trick

This is the one that catches people out, and it is worth knowing about. A thin layer of closed-cell sprayed over a body of cheap open-cell looks and feels exactly like closed-cell from the surface. Thumb test passes. Everything passes, until you look at a cross section.

To check, pick a spot that does not matter visually, such as the end of a rim joist run or a back corner of the crawl space, and cut a wedge all the way down to the substrate with a long serrated knife or a handsaw. Look at the cut face. One material all the way through is what you want. A firm skin over a soft off-white body is the answer to your question. Wear a respirator, gloves, and eye protection when you cut foam, and if the idea of cutting into your own insulation bothers you, that is a completely reasonable place to bring in a professional instead.

There is a paperwork version of the same check. Board feet are square feet times inches of thickness. A thousand square feet at three inches is three thousand board feet. If the invoice bills a quantity that cannot cover the area at the depth you were promised, the shortfall was planned, not accidental. 6. Read the paperwork

A real invoice for a spray foam job says more than “spray foam insulation, lump sum.” Here is what should be on it, or available if you ask:

  • The actual product. Manufacturer and product line, and whether it is open-cell or closed-cell. Not just “foam.”
  • Quantity and depth. Board feet or square footage, with the installed thickness or target R-value by area.
  • Batch or lot numbers for the A and B components. If a product turns out to have a problem, this is the only thing that traces it.
  • The technical data sheet and the safety data sheet. Ask for both. They tell you the published R-value per inch, the perm rating at thickness, and the re-entry guidance.
  • The re-entry time you were given and the warranty terms, in writing.

You are entitled to ask for all of it, and a contractor who did the job properly will hand it over without any drama. Reluctance is itself information.

What to do if you think something is wrong

Document it first

Photos with a tape measure in the frame, dated. Note where the smell is worst and when. Keep the quote, the invoice, and any texts.

Get an independent look

A building science consultant, an energy auditor, or an inspector who knows foam and has no job to sell you. A few hundred dollars here changes everything that comes after.

Go back with facts

Measurements and photos, not accusations. Most contractors would rather fix a problem than have one, and many of these end in a return visit.

Then decide

Thin spots and missed cavities are often repairable. Off-ratio foam or the wrong product usually is not, and that means removal.

The independent assessment before the confrontation is the part people skip, and it is the part that matters most. Once you have gone in hot without numbers, the conversation is about who is angrier rather than about how thick the foam is. With a written third party report you are simply describing a fact, and a reasonable installer can respond to it.

Be prepared for the honest answer on the bad cases. Removing cured foam is mechanical: scraping and cutting it off the substrate by hand, inside a crawl space or an attic, with containment and disposal, often taking some of the sheathing surface with it. It is priced as labour, and trade labour around Seattle runs roughly $95 to $175 per hour, so a full removal commonly costs more than the original install did. And to be fair: most installs are fine

We fix other people’s foam for a living, so the jobs we see are not a random sample. Plenty of crews in this region do careful work. An uneven surface, saw marks where it was trimmed to the studs, a chemical smell on day one, a small gap in an awkward corner: all of that is normal and none of it means you were cheated.

If your checks come back clean, take the win and go do something else. If one thing is bothering you, an hour with a flashlight and a tape will usually settle it either way. Questions homeowners ask us about this

My spray foam still smells a month after it was installed. Is that normal?

No. A faint trace for a few days after the cure period is normal, but a strong odour a month later is not, and it usually means the foam was mixed off ratio. Off-ratio foam keeps releasing unreacted chemical and it generally cannot be corrected in place: ventilating, heating, or sealing over it does not reliably fix the problem. Get an independent assessment before you talk to the installer, because the likely outcome is removal and replacement, and you want that conversation grounded in a written finding rather than a description of a smell.

How thick should my spray foam actually be?

It depends entirely on the assembly and the R-value you were sold, so start with your quote rather than a rule of thumb. Closed-cell delivers about R-6 to R-7 per inch, so R-21 takes roughly three to three and a half inches. Open-cell delivers about R-3.6 to R-4 per inch, so the same R-21 takes roughly five and a half to six inches. Measure in a dozen spots with a skewer and a tape, including the corners and the hard to reach runs, then compare the average against what you paid for.

Can I tell closed-cell from open-cell just by touching it?

Usually, but not always, and the exception is the one that matters. Closed-cell is rigid and will not dent under thumb pressure, while open-cell compresses like a firm sponge and springs back. The trick that defeats the thumb test is a thin closed-cell skin sprayed over a body of open-cell, which feels correct from the surface. The only reliable check is a cross section: cut a wedge down to the substrate in an inconspicuous spot and look for two distinct layers.

Should I cut into my own insulation to check it?

A small wedge cut in a spot that does not matter, such as the end of a rim joist run or a back corner of a crawl space, is reasonable and easy to patch afterwards. Wear a respirator, gloves, and eye protection, and stay away from wiring and plumbing. If you are not comfortable doing it, that is a good reason to bring in an independent inspector instead: they will cut the sample, photograph it, and put the finding in a report that carries more weight than your phone picture.

Who can inspect a spray foam job for me around Seattle?

Look for a building science consultant, a certified energy auditor, or a home inspector who specifically lists spray foam experience, and pick one who has no interest in selling you the remediation. Ask up front whether they measure installed thickness and cut core samples, because an inspector who only looks at the surface will not answer your question. Expect to pay for a few hours of a specialist’s time. It is the cheapest money in this entire situation.

Will the original installer fix a bad job for free?

Sometimes, and more often than people expect when the problem is thin spots or missed cavities, because adding passes is cheap for them and a bad review is not. It gets harder when the fix is a full removal, since that can cost more than the job was worth. Your leverage is documentation: measurements, photos, the invoice, the product data, and an independent report. Go in with those, ask what they propose, and give them the chance to make it right before you assume they will not.
